SideEye™: Active Turn Assist System increases Blind-Spot Safety
Use SideEye from Stoneridge-Orlaco and prevent blind-spot accidents. This camera and radar detection system actively alerts you when cyclists, pedestrians or other road users are present in the blind spot of your truck. SideEye is therefore ideal for increasing the safety of vulnerable road users in urban environments.
To enhance the safety in the blind spot, camera and active detection systems are required in a growing number of countries. Starting March 1, 2021 in the United Kingdom, for example, vehicles over 12 tons must meet the Direct Vision Standard if they are to be allowed to drive into the London urban area. In the EU, new truck types must have a blind spot system in compliance with the General Safety Regulation from 2022. New vehicles must have such a system from 2024.

Visual and Acoustic Warnings
SideEye is a certified Kraftfahrt bundesamt (KBA) turn assist system. The system actively provides visual and audible alerts for drivers as soon as other road users (such as pedestrians and cyclists) are detected in the truck's blind spot.
And because SideEye uses a combination of radar signals, audio signals and camera images, you will always have a good view of the blind spot in the area surrounding your truck. Furthermore, a monitor overlay indicates that there is someone in the blind spot. The monitor has two different overlays. The default overlay consists of red marking lines. The driver can also choose for an overlay with a warning triangle.
Accurate Detection in a Split Second
In addition to a FAMOS camera, SideEye includes a Short Range radar unit. The Short Range radar unit is a small, robust, short-range radar sensor mounted on the side of a truck. The sensor transmits 24-GHz radar signals at low power and receives the radio signals reflected by the objects. The signals received allow the radar unit to detect people and objects and determine whether they are moving. The radar unit is designed to process these radar detections within 300 ms. This allows drivers to respond immediately and accidents can be prevented.
Enhanced Safety and Peace of Mind
The biggest fear for any driver is accidentally hitting someone. SideEye significantly reduces the risk of an accident. Not only does it provide drivers with a view of the blind spot, it also uses radar detection so that drivers can be actively alerted when something is present in the blind spot — giving them the peace of mind of knowing that they can maneuver their trucks through the busy streets of a city more safely.
SideEye is even able to work effectively in adverse weather conditions and because the system uses a combination of camera images and radar signals, drivers can rely on two different systems to provide the information they need. Having a view of the blind spot means drivers can work easily and confidently and can maneuver with ease in any traffic scenario. This increases the safety of drivers and other road users in the vicinity of the truck.
One in Two People Don't Know Where the Blind Spot Is
Research has shown that most accidents occur at the front right-hand side of the cab. Although trucks are fitted with a front mirror and a close-proximity mirror, which cover the area in front of and to the right of the cab respectively, there are still blind spots in this area. With SideEye, these blind spots are easily brought back into view. This unique camera and radar detection system replaces the front mirror and close-proximity mirror and offers an excellent view of the areas they cover and beyond with a single glance, increasing the safety of both drivers and cyclists.
Camera and Radar Detection System
SideEye consists of a FAMOS camera, Short Range radar unit, 7" monitor and the relevant cabling. Is your vehicle already equipped with a side view camera or Short Range radarunit? Please contact us for more information.

Integrate SideEye into Existing Systems
Some trucks are already equipped with an HMI display. These systems are suitable for extension with SideEye. The SRD interface box integrates radar alerts directly into the image on the existing monitor via visual overlays and acoustic signals. This process can be carried out using either an existing Stoneridge-Orlaco camera system or an own HMI display. Adding detection overlays to the video images makes it possible for drivers to work more safely, reliably and efficiently.
